2 eating apples, peeled, cored and chopped (you can use cooking apples but add a little sugar to sweeten)
3 conference pears, peeled cored and chopped
small amount of water
2 teaspoons of sugar
For the crumble:
150g plain flour
85g demerara sugar
Preheat oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas mark 4.
Peel, core and chop the fruit into small cubes and put into a saucepan with a small amount of water. Add the sugar and bring to a boil. Once boiling turn down to a simmer and leave to soften.
Cut the butter into cubes and place into a mixing bowl with the flour. Rub the mixture with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the demerara sugar.
Once the fruit is soft add to a oven-proof dish and sprinkle the crumble mixture over the top. Loosen the top a little with a fork.
Put in the oven for about 35-40 minutes.
Check if fruit is soft, if it is not then put back in the oven and keep checking every 5 minutes till it is soft.
Serve with some lovely custard or cream.
